GLOBALSTAR COMMUNICATIONS SERVE SCIENCE
CJSC GlobalTel provids a Globalstar communications channel to the stratospheric measuring
complex prepared for the experimental flight by the Russian Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere
and Radiowaves Propagation (IZMIRAN) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. GlobalTel has provided GSP-1620 satellite
modems for data collection in the on-line mode, which will solve long-existing problems of data transceiving and
flight control in the real-time mode and complex's safe landing. The joint report on the satellite communications
for the stratospheric complex was made at the 17 Symposium of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Norway in June 2005.
IZMIRAN has been performing unique high-altitude balloon-borne experiments on measuring geophysical fields
for many years. Up till now the problem of transmitting the research data from the balloon to the terrestrial data
collection point remained unsolved. The data were recorded onboard to the memory of the hanger-mounted controllers.
As a result of experiments a part of data was invariably lost due to the loss of balloon's hangers.
This problem was solved by integrating the Globalstar satellite modem into the system which ensures continuous transmission of commands and reception of measuring instruments data at the IZMIRAN laboratory. While developing the project the IZMIRAN specialists considered various options for data collection and transmission and found that the best solution to their task was the Globalstar satellite communications equipment.
