«Conti-Satellite» Ltd., an affiliate of CJSC «GlobalSat», started commercial operation of the vehicle monitoring system for a largest Russian company «AK ALROSA». The monitoring is performed on the basis of the Russian segment of the Globalstar satellite communications system.

The vehicles use GSP1600 Globalstar UTs with GCK1410 car kits, which support telephony, packet data and navigation equipment developed by RCN-Conti (located in Riga). The system allows to see on computer screens of central and regional, including mobile, control points the vehicle's route map , cargo and alarm parameters, to have continuous telephone communication between the vehicle and the dispatcher. An average packet data call between the dispatcher and the onboard controller is about 10 seconds long, the data volume transmitted from the onboard controller to the dispatcher's server is approximately 200 bites. The use of the packet data mode compared with asynchronous data mode with channels switching significantly decreases traffic expenditures.

The system development for other vertical markets who require vehicle, vessel of fixed assets tracking, is expected. CJSC «GlobalTel» mobile communications satellite network service area and Globalstar's world-wide coverage allow operation of such monitoring and tracking systems on the basis of packet data and SMS in the Russian territory, in CIS countries, in Europe and Asia.
