GLOBALSTAR PROVIDES SATELLITE TELEPHONE SERVICE TO AREAS IN FLORIDA DAMAGE BY CHARLEY AND FRANCES
Satellite Services Prove to be Essential in Managing Disaster Relief
MILPITAS, CA. , September 9, 2004 - During the past three weeks, two major hurricanes left thousands
of Florida residents without power, telephone and other basic essential services.
When Hurricane Charley hit the state, Globalstar LLC, provider of the world's most widely used
mobile satellite telephone, supplied over 150 no charge satellite telephone handsets and free
airtime to persons in the storm stricken areas. Working with the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA), the Governor's Office, and various Globalstar agents and distributors, the company
was able to provide satellite voice and data services to emergency workers and citizens in
damaged areas left with little or no terrestrial or cellular telephone service.
"During times of emergency, one realizes the importance of the basic essential services that we
all take for granted on a day to day basis", said Dennis Allen, Senior VP of Sales for Globalstar
LLC. "Globalstar was able to provide satellite telephone service when many other alternatives
were often unavailable due to damage or destruction of the local telecommunication infrastructure,
power outages or other issues such as insufficient calling capacity."
"The Globalstar phones were great", added Randy Pierce, Site Coordinator for the State of
Florida. "We were able to count on them and they made the task easier to deal with, by
allowing us to communicate and coordinate the emergency efforts into those areas affected
by the hurricane."
When Hurricane Frances approached the state last week, Globalstar shipped hundreds of
additional satellite phones into the region. Because of logistical and other shipping
issues caused by the storm, Globalstar contacted Flight Options, a Cleveland-based
provider of private jet travel solutions, and employed the use of specially chartered
jets to ensure that the satellite phone hardware arrived as quickly as possible.
"Flight Options is dedicated to providing high levels of service," said Michael Scheeringa,
Chief Operating Officer, Flight Options, LLC. "Our team of professionals is trained to plan
and predict the travel needs of our owners daily. It is gratifying to know that even in very
challenging circumstances we were able to continue to provide service and transport these
much needed phones to Florida.
Globalstar is the world's most popular handheld satellite phone. Globalstar offers satellite
telecommunications services, for both voice and data, from virtually anywhere to more than
123,000 subscribers in over 120 countries around the world. Beyond emergency services,
Globalstar primarily provides business and recreational communications to industries and
individuals located in remote areas throughout the globe.
