GLOBALSTAR AND GLOBALTEL EXPAND FAX SERVICES
Globalstar has introduced a new fax service allowing users to send and receive fax documents
with virtually any standard Group 3 fax machine connected to Globalstar UTs via a small-size
interface device. In the send mode the fax service allows delivery to PSTN fax numbers in the
U.S. or Canada so far, with full worldwide PSTN sending capability expected to be offered in
the future. The system uses a store-and-forward system through the Globalstar operator's
central server. Sending and reception of a fax message occurs in the usual way for the user.
The interface device is sold in two options: Globalstar StarFax-100 provides only send/receive
fax capability and Globalstar StarPort700 allows connection of the fax-machine and PC through
Ethernet or RLAN (local data radio network) port. The service activation fee amounts to 39.95
US dollars a month. Users pay only for the phone call when sending/receiving faxes.
GlobalTel introduced the fax service in the receive mode with activation of special
3-rd fax number in 2003. In the near future GlobalTel will introduce the outgoing
fax service for all subscribers having UTs with activated data service. Fax messages
are sent to both PSTN numbers of Russia and other countries. Users pay only for the phone
call when sending/receiving faxes. The sale of interface devices for direct connection of
standard Group 3 fax machines is planned for the near future.
