Proposals on telephonisation of the Republic of Tuva were developed by CJSC
GlobalTel jointly with "FGUP Tuvasviazinform" regional telecommunications
operator and presented to the Republican government at the end of 2001 - start of 2002.
Voice and data transmissions through the Globalstar satellite system were considered
as major services.
In August 2002 CJSC GlobalTel and "Tuvasviazinform" executed with the
Government of the Republic of Tuva an agreement on cooperation within the
framework of the Republican Programme "Development of Telecommunications Facilities
in Tuva in 2001-2006". The present agreement is targeted at ensuring up-to-date
telecommunications services in remote and hard-to-reach communities and social objects
located there through the Globalstar satellite communications system.
In August 2002 CJSC GlobalTel experts installed, tested and held demonstrations of the
Globalstar subscriber equipment in the village of Kungurtug. One of priority tasks of
this trip was to show the importance and urgent need of telecommunications in hard reaching
areas in Russia.
The first call from the public call-box installed in the building of the Administration
was made by the Head of the local Administration and the President of Tuva. Afterwards
local residents could become familiar with subscriber equipment and had the opportunity
to make their first ever phone calls and to make sure of the satellite communication quality.
Currently Ericsson FAU-200 fixed satellite terminals have been installed in Mugur-Aksy
and Kachyk communities. Another fixed UT will soon be installed in the Ovursky district
(in the village of Ak-Chyraa) and later in Bai-Taiginsky District (the village of Kara-Holl).
The launch of telecommunications services in remote and hard reaching areas contributes
to the solution of burning social problems, economy reviving and infrastructure development.
CJSC GlobalTel is an exclusive Service Provider of the Globalstar global mobile
satellite communication system in Russia. The founders of the company are OJSC
Rostelecom and Globalstar L.P. In May 1997the Agreement was signed between Globalstar L.P.
and CJSC GlobalTel which granted exclusive rights to CJSC GlobalTel for providing Globalstar
services in Russia. Commercial revenue operation of the Globalstar system throughout Russia
was started in November, 2000.
